颱風的命名

以前颱風並無名字,而是按照每年發生次序編號,國際間並無統 一規定。但當同時有二、三個颱風發生時,會常不明所指而發生混淆 ,於是自民國36年(1947年)起,統一由美軍駐關島的「聯合颱風警 報中心」負責派飛機偵察,當達颱風強度者,即予以命名,以資分辨 。

命名的原則是北半球180度以西,按英文字母順序排列四組女性 名字,週而復始,輪流使用;北半球180度以東,另定數組女性名 字使用。

至於南半球所發生之颱風,則使用男性名字。

如此則可分辨 颱風所發生之區域和先後的次序而不致混亂。   

民國68年(1979年)北半球再變更命名方式,中及西北太平洋( 東經180以西)至南海颱風名稱改以男、女性名字相間排列,仍 分四組,共84個名字。又民國79年(1990)再度修改為每組23個男、 女名字相間排列共四組,計92個。
